Our Story

The Jamie Phillips Memorial Cancer Fund, Inc. was created to honor the life and legacy of 18 year -old college student Jamie Phillips who succumbed to cancer in 2018. His desire was to become a medical social worker and serve adolescents and young adults.

After receiving his cancer diagnosis, Jamie began advocating and raising funds for other young adult cancer patients. Jamie became an advocate for legislation requiring insurance companies to pay for fertility preservation treatments. He initiated fundraisers and donated the proceeds to Johns Hopkins Hospital to assist other young adults receiving chemotherapy with the cost of fertility preservation procedures. In March of 2017, Jamie spoke to the Maryland State Senate in support of legislation that would require insurance companies to pay for these costly procedures. He was also interviewed by the local newspaper in support of this cause. The governor signed that bill in May 2018; one month after Jamie’s death.

The Jamie Phillips Memorial Cancer Fund, Inc. exists to continue his work of

caring for others by helping to ease the burden of cancer.

​

During his illness Jamie was hospitalized on several occasions for extended periods of time. While visiting Jamie, his family recognized that many parents needed additional resources to care for their sick children. We believe that the lack of financial resources should never hinder parents from providing the best possible care to their children.

 

We believe in serving our community with love and compassion.
 

The purpose of the Jamie Phillips Memorial Cancer Fund is to assist with alleviating the financial burdens of cancer by providing scholarships, gas cards, hospital parking passes, and personalized services to adolescent and young adult cancer patients and their caregivers.
